Pre-Teen Girls Hairstyles

For pre-teen girls, hairstyle is often a statement of individuality and identity. Pre-teens are looking both to their peers and to celebrities for guidance on fashions that reflect current trends and allow them to demonstrate personal style. They may experiment with various cuts and hair colors until finding one that feels and looks right. When picking out hairstyles, pre-teens should consider face shape as well as personality. A person with a heart-shaped face may find chin-length or longer styles most flattering. A girl with a square face may prefer medium or short hair with wave or roundness around the face, whereas someone with an oval face looks good with just about any hairstyle. As far as color, pre-teens can keep it simple by adding brown or blonde highlights, or make a statement by selecting more vibrant colors, like pink or red.

Long Hair
Many pre-teen girls want long, layered straight hair with highlights, like Jennifer Aniston's. They can change up this look by adding waves or curls. For instance, Taylor Swift often wears her long blonde hair feathered on one side.

Ponytails
Ponytails look good on just about anyone---and they aren't just for the gym. Pre-teens can try a side ponytail, twisted into a bun with a colorful hair tie and a headband. Side-swept bangs may look good with this style. High ponytails can also be edgy when sported with bangs to complement the look.

Short Hair
Pre-teens can look to Rihanna for the various fashion statements you can make with a bob haircut: asymmetrical, with bangs or without, and with blonde peek-a-boo highlights. For a less edgy look, girls can try natural, shoulder-length hairstyles with bangs feathered to one side of the face, like Nicole Richie circa 2008.

Emo Hairstyles
Pop star Avril Lavigne is a muse for pre-teens wanting an "emo" hairstyle. These styles often feature long, choppy layers in the front of the head that look as if they were cut with regular scissors. Girls with blonde hair often use pink or green peek-a-boo highlights, while girls with darker hair often use purple or red highlights.

Popular Teen Hairstyles

Every teenage girl wants to be chic and in style from head to toe. Having the best hairstyles will help you skip right to the front of the class. Whether you need straight or curly, glamorous or on the go, there's a look for you. Don't get stuck with outdated hairstyles this school year. Grab your best styling tools and get to work with this guide to popular teen hairstyles. Does this Spark an idea?

Grecian Bubble Ponytail
This is a modified version of the complicated Grecian twist. With this style, you can be out the door in five minutes and look chic as well. Take freshly washed hair and divide it horizontally. Secure both halves with an elastic. The top half must be secured as low as possible, as should the bottom half. It will look as if the top ponytail is lying right on top of the bottom one. Once the ponytails are secured, place an elastic on the last 3 inches of the bottom ponytail. Next, place another elastic 3 inches above that one. Pull on the hair between the elastics to fan it out. It will look like a bubble when you do this correctly. If you hair is longer, you can add more elastics. Finish the look with hairspray. You can also accessorize with clips along the ponytail.

Pin Straight with a Braid
This look couldn't be simpler, especially for girls with straight hair. This style will work for any hair length, but it looks best on long hair lengths. Take clean, straight hair, or curly hair that has been straightened, and comb a silicone-based shine spray on the hair. Part the hair to the side and make a braid along the part. The braid must not go past the ear. Clip the braid in place with a clip, and spray the braid with hairspray. Pin the other side of the part that has no braid back with a clip as well. Pull a section of hair from behind the clip forward to disguise it.

Pinned Curl Updo
This innovative look is for curly hair types. Take clean curly hair and work a shine serum through to prevent frizz. To ensure proper distribution of the shine serum, warm the serum in your palms and finger comb it through the hair. Divide the hair into two halves horizontally. Secure the hair (both sections) with an elastic. The ponytails must lay one on top of the other. Take a section of curl from both ponytails and use it to cover the elastic. Carefully pin some of the curls to the base of their ponytails and allow some to remain free. Finish the look with hairspray.

Relaxed Beach Waves
This style is trendy and safe for hair, as it requires little heat styling. Wash and condition the hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Scrunch a texturizing spray through the hair and blow dry until it is 50 percent dry on the low setting. Allow the hair to dry naturally, and work a shine serum through the hair. With this look you can be out of the house in less than 10 minutes. For long hair, pull the front sections back from your face and secure with a clip, to prevent hair falling in your eyes.

Sleek and Perky Ponytail
The standard ponytail is back and still very trendy among teens. Take freshly washed and blow-dried hair and flat iron it until sleek and smooth. When doing this, apply a heat protectant serum to the hair and comb through. Take a one-inch wide section of hair and flat iron from ½ an inch away from the root all the way to the ends. Limit your passes to four per section to prevent burning the hair. Once the hair is straightened fully, gather it into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. The ponytail should not be too high; it should fall just about where the crown of the head is. Brush the sides of the ponytail to smooth its appearance. Allow a few wisps of hair at the nape to escape if they naturally fall free. Finish the look with a shine spray.
